"Sacro Bosco di Bomarzo"
Photographer and journalist Peter Wiklund told me about the Sacro Bosco di Bomarzo in Italy, in a small village about 60 kilometers north of Rome. The village belonged to the Orsini family and in 1552 the prince Orsini built the garden in memory of his recently deceased wife Giulia. For some reason it was not a classic Renaissance garden but one that was scattered across the valley below the palace filled with curios and monsters. All of this sounded alluring and I traveled there in the spring of 2006. I found the garden to be as interesting as promised but I realized that the garden was integrated into the village and the castle and in September 2008 I went back to Bomarzo and concentrated my photography on the village and the castle. On my next trip I will investigate the ancient ruins there.
